While Matsusaka is famous around the world for its premium beef, the city is also a hidden treasure of samurai history, traditional craftsmanship, and merchant culture. On this 3-hour walking tour, you’ll discover the rich history and culture of Matsusaka through unique experiences. Try your hand at weaving the famous Matsusaka Momen cotton, explore the ruins of a samurai castle, step inside an authentic 17th-century samurai residence, and visit the magnificent mansion of a wealthy merchant from the Edo period. This tour is the perfect experience for travelers who want to explore Japan beyond the usual tourist attractions.
Itinerary
- Meeting point : Matsusaka Station (You can reach the station by JR or Kintetsu line.)
- You can choose to start your tour at either 10:00 AM or 1:00 PM. Matsusaka Station is easily accessible by JR Line or Kintetsu Limited Express. Access
- Matsusaka Cotton Cneter
- Matsusaka cotton is famous for its distinct, beautiful indigo-blue striped patterns. It is one of Japan’s best -known historic cotton fabrics and has been produced since 17th century. Let’s make a small item of Matsusaka cotton on your own. It takes about 1 hour.
- Matsusaka Castle Ruins & Castle Guard Residents
- Although the main keep no longer stands, Matsusaka Castle remains a fascinating place to explore. One of the best ways to appreciate a Japanese castle is by examining its impressive stone walls. Here, you’ll discover stonework from different periods, including the original walls built in the late 16th century and sections reconstructed during the 17th century. As we explore the castle grounds, you’ll also hear the surprising story of Matsusaka’s connection to the Japanese tea ceremony.
We’ll also visit the Castle Guards’ Residences, one of Matsusaka’s most picturesque spots. Put yourself in the shoes of a samurai and capture memorable photos in this beautifully preserved historic setting.
- Residences of Matusaka Merchants
- Beginning in the 17th century, Matsusaka merchants opened shops in Edo—modern-day Tokyo—and many became some of the wealthiest and most influential merchants in Japan. Among them was the famous Mitsui family, founders of what would become one of Japan’s largest business groups. Although the Mitsui birthplace is not open to the public, we’ll stop to view its exterior. Even more exciting, two magnificent merchant residences have survived the centuries. Step inside these rare historic homes and discover how Japan’s wealthy merchants lived during the Edo period, a time when commerce helped shape the nation’s future.
